New Research: Acupuncture Shown to Significantly Improve Sleep in Breast Cancer Patients

By Jose Rodriguez, AcuRodos · 26 May 2026 · 4 min read

A major new study published this week in the European Medical Journal has confirmed that acupuncture therapies — including acupressure and mindfulness-based approaches — can significantly improve insomnia in breast cancer patients. Here is what the research found, and what it means for anyone struggling with sleep.

Insomnia is one of the most common and disruptive symptoms experienced by people living with cancer. It can worsen fatigue, affect mood, reduce quality of life, and even interfere with the body's ability to respond to treatment. For many patients, standard sleep medications are not ideal due to interactions with other treatments — which is exactly why researchers have been looking at safe, effective alternatives.

This new research, published on 24 May 2026, offers some of the clearest evidence yet that acupuncture-based therapies deserve a central place in supportive cancer care.

What the Research Found

The analysis compared multiple approaches including auricular acupressure, mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), acupressure alone, intradermal needle therapy, and combinations of these methods. All were assessed against standard care for their impact on sleep quality.

The standout finding was that mindfulness-based stress reduction combined with acupressure produced the greatest improvement in sleep quality, with a clinically meaningful reduction in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores. Acupressure alone, auricular acupressure, and MBSR on its own also all showed meaningful improvements — and were considered safe and well-tolerated.

"The findings support further evaluation of acupuncture therapies as part of supportive cancer care, particularly for patients seeking nonpharmacologic approaches to insomnia management."

Why This Matters Beyond Cancer Care

While this particular study focused on breast cancer patients, the mechanisms behind why acupuncture improves sleep are not unique to that group. Acupuncture works in part by regulating the nervous system, reducing cortisol (the stress hormone), and supporting the body's natural production of melatonin — all of which are relevant to anyone experiencing insomnia, whether caused by stress, chronic pain, hormonal changes, or other conditions.

At AcuRodos, we regularly treat patients whose sleep problems are connected to:

Stress and anxiety
Chronic pain
Menopause and hormonal shifts
Grief or emotional difficulty
Overwork and burnout
Digestive issues disrupting sleep

In Chinese medicine, insomnia is rarely treated as a standalone problem. We look at the whole picture — what is keeping the mind active at night, what is depleting the body's reserves, and how the organs are communicating with one another. This personalised, root-cause approach is what makes acupuncture so effective for sleep conditions that resist standard treatment.

What This Means for Our Patients

If you or someone you care for is experiencing insomnia — whether as part of cancer recovery or as a standalone issue — this research adds to a growing body of evidence that acupuncture is worth taking seriously as a first-line complementary treatment, not a last resort.

Importantly, the study also confirms that the safest and most effective approaches involve techniques that are gentle and non-invasive. Acupressure (pressure applied to acupuncture points without needles) was among the top performers — meaning that even patients who are hesitant about needles have excellent options available to them.
