TCM treats skin conditions from the inside out β€” addressing the internal imbalance behind the symptom, not just the surface presentation.

In Chinese medicine, the skin is the outermost expression of internal health. Persistent skin conditions β€” eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea β€” are rarely just skin problems. They reflect deeper imbalances involving Heat, Damp, Blood deficiency or stagnation. Treating the root rather than the surface is what makes TCM uniquely effective for conditions that keep coming back despite topical treatment.

How TCM approaches skin conditions

Every skin condition in TCM has a specific internal pattern. Eczema with weeping, oozing lesions points to Damp-Heat. Dry, flaky eczema or psoriasis suggests Blood deficiency failing to nourish the skin. Red, inflamed acne reflects Heat in the Lung and Stomach channels. Rosacea often involves Liver Heat rising to the face. By identifying and treating the correct pattern β€” rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach β€” TCM can produce lasting improvement where topical treatments alone have failed.

Acupuncture reduces inflammation through its effect on inflammatory cytokines, regulates immune function (relevant for autoimmune skin conditions like psoriasis), and improves the circulation of Blood and Qi to the skin β€” all of which contribute to healing from within.

Research highlights

Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis) β€” Multiple systematic reviews confirm acupuncture reduces itch intensity and SCORAD (severity) scores in atopic dermatitis. A 2020 Cochrane review found acupuncture superior to antihistamines for itch relief.

Acne β€” Systematic reviews confirm acupuncture and TCM are effective for acne vulgaris, with comparable results to oral antibiotics for moderate acne and fewer systemic side effects.

Alopecia areata β€” Clinical studies show acupuncture stimulates hair follicle activity and improves local blood circulation to the scalp, producing measurable regrowth in alopecia areata.

Psoriasis β€” Evidence supports acupuncture as an adjunct treatment for psoriasis, particularly for reducing the itch and improving quality of life scores alongside conventional management.

What to expect at AcuRodos

Full TCM assessment

We examine your skin presentation alongside your full health picture β€” digestion, sleep, stress, diet and hormonal factors β€” to identify your individual TCM pattern.

Acupuncture treatment

Points are selected to address your internal pattern β€” not just the skin. Local points at affected areas may also be used to promote healing directly.

TCM dietary guidance

Diet plays a significant role in skin health in TCM. Based on Jose's nutrition background, you'll receive specific dietary adjustments to support your treatment.

Progress tracking

We use validated tools including SCORAD for eczema and DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index) to track your improvement objectively across your course of treatment.

How long does treatment take?

Skin conditions typically require a longer treatment course than acute pain conditions β€” 8–12 sessions is common for chronic eczema or psoriasis, with maintenance sessions thereafter. Acne and hair loss conditions vary significantly by individual. Results cannot be guaranteed but meaningful improvement is typically visible within 6 sessions in responsive cases.
