Chronic pain affects over one million people in Ireland. Whether it's a back that's been aching for years, a shoulder that won't move properly, or nerve pain that disrupts your sleep β€” acupuncture offers a clinically proven, medication-free approach that addresses the root cause rather than masking the symptom.

Why acupuncture works for pain

Pain in Western medicine is understood as a signal β€” the nervous system's alarm. Acupuncture works by interrupting and modifying that alarm signal through several well-documented mechanisms: it stimulates the release of endorphins and enkephalins (the body's natural painkillers), reduces inflammatory cytokines at the site of injury, and regulates the descending pain inhibitory pathways in the spinal cord and brain.

In Chinese medicine, pain is understood as the result of stagnation β€” Qi and Blood failing to flow freely through the channels. Acupuncture needles placed at specific points restore that flow, reducing the biochemical and neurological signals that produce the experience of pain.

The evidence for acupuncture and pain

NICE Guideline NG193 (2021) β€” recommends acupuncture as a first-line treatment option for chronic primary pain, alongside exercise and psychological approaches. This is the NHS and Irish equivalent clinical gold standard.

Vickers et al. (2018) meta-analysis β€” largest acupuncture pain analysis ever conducted. Reviewed 39 trials and 20,827 patients. Confirmed acupuncture produces effects significantly beyond placebo for back, neck, shoulder pain, headache and osteoarthritis.

2025 systematic review β€” 862 randomised controlled trials analysed. Statistically significant reduction in pain scores across all musculoskeletal conditions. Effect maintained at 12-month follow-up.

How we track your progress at AcuRodos

At AcuRodos, we don't work on guesswork. We use validated clinical outcome measures at each visit to track your improvement objectively. These are the same tools used by GPs, physiotherapists and hospital pain clinics:

NRS / VAS Pain Scale

Numeric 0–10 pain rating at every session. Simple, validated, and shows your progress clearly over your course of treatment.

Oswestry Disability Index

For back pain and sciatica β€” a 10-question validated questionnaire giving a percentage disability score that GPs recognise immediately.

Range of Motion (ROM)

Measured with a goniometer for shoulder, neck and joint conditions. An objective, reproducible measure of functional improvement.

WOMAC Index

For arthritis patients β€” measures pain, stiffness and physical function. Allows us to demonstrate meaningful clinical improvement over your treatment course.

"Acupuncture produces effects significantly beyond placebo for back and neck pain, shoulder pain, headache and osteoarthritis."

What to expect at AcuRodos

First session: A full clinical assessment including a detailed pain history, physical examination, and where appropriate, movement and functional testing. You'll leave with a clear Treatment Roadmap β€” a written plan showing your treatment goals, the number of sessions recommended, and the outcome measures we'll use to track progress.

Follow-up sessions: 40–50 minutes. We begin with a brief check-in using your pain scale, then proceed with acupuncture β€” often combined with heat therapy (moxibustion) and cupping for musculoskeletal conditions. Most patients notice meaningful improvement within 4–6 sessions.

After your course: Many patients transition to monthly maintenance sessions. Others find they no longer need regular treatment once the underlying imbalance is resolved.

How long does it take?

Acute pain conditions (present for less than 3 months) typically respond well within 6 sessions. Chronic conditions (over 3 months) generally require a longer course β€” our 10-session AHM package is specifically designed for this. Individual results vary and cannot be guaranteed.
