Anxiety and poor sleep are two of the most common presentations at AcuRodos — and two of the conditions that respond most consistently to acupuncture. When the mind won't rest and the body can't recover, the entire system suffers. Acupuncture works at the neurological level to restore what modern life so effectively disrupts.

How acupuncture calms the nervous system

Acupuncture regulates the autonomic nervous system — shifting the body from the sympathetic "fight or flight" state that anxiety keeps it locked in, into the parasympathetic "rest and digest" state where healing and sleep become possible. It does this by stimulating the release of GABA (the brain's primary calming neurotransmitter), reducing cortisol (the primary stress hormone), and promoting the production of serotonin and melatonin — the neurochemicals essential for mood stability and natural sleep.

Many patients fall asleep during their first acupuncture session. This is not a coincidence — it is the nervous system doing exactly what it's supposed to do when the appropriate signals are given.

Research highlights

Insomnia (EMJ 2026) — Systematic review of 18 RCTs covering 1,399 breast cancer patients. Acupressure combined with mindfulness ranked #1 for improving Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores. Results applicable beyond cancer patients.

Anxiety — Multiple systematic reviews confirm acupuncture reduces GAD-7 scores significantly compared to waitlist control. A 2021 review in Frontiers in Psychiatry confirms acupuncture modulates the HPA axis and reduces cortisol levels measurably.

Depression — NICE (2022) acknowledges acupuncture as an option for persistent subthreshold depressive symptoms. Cochrane Review confirms acupuncture plus usual care is more effective than usual care alone for depression.

What we measure at AcuRodos

Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)

19-question validated sleep assessment. Score above 5 indicates poor sleep. We measure at intake and every 4 sessions to track your improvement objectively.

GAD-7

The gold standard 7-question anxiety scale used by GPs and psychiatrists. Scores 0–21. Allows us to demonstrate measurable reduction in anxiety across your treatment course.

PHQ-9

9-question depression screening tool widely used in Irish primary care. Enables objective tracking of mood improvements alongside acupuncture treatment.

Burnout assessment

We use a modified Maslach Burnout Inventory for patients presenting with exhaustion and occupational burnout — tracking energy, engagement and efficacy over time.
